The first Type R was introduced in 1992 as the NSX Type R. Contrary to what most people believe, Honda has been deeply involved in racing. This was especially the case in the late 1980s and early 1990s. With SIX consecutive constructors titles in F1 (the highest level of racing in the world) Honda cemented themselves as a true performance brand. Taking heavy inspiration from their racing success, the Honda development team set to build a street car for the race track. 3 time world champion Aytron Senna helped tune this car, which is known to us as the NSX Type R. Honda didn’t just stop there. They introduced the Integra Type R followed by the Civic Type R. Both featuring different drive trains (from their original model) and significant weight reduction for track use. Honda since then has remained true to their racing heritage and the United States finally received their first type in 20 years in the form as the Civic Type R in 2017. The Type R is still on sale today. The latest model, dubbed by car enthusiasts as the FL5; which we have had the pleasure to work on a few times. With Hondas continued success in racing we are excited to see what else they bring us in the future! Cheers!
